Misleading Headline of the Day
CNN: Poll: Dems Becoming Less Popular but no Gains for GOP
My initial response was that this is just as it should be -- if you have any confidence in either party you're a complete fool. Yet read the actual poll results:
Fifty-two percent of people questioned say they have a favorable opinion of the Democratic party, down six points from February. Forty-one percent say they have a positive view of the Republican party, up just two points from February.
Exactly how is it that a two-point gain for Republicans merits a headline of "no gains for GOP"? I guess I should add that anyone who has any confidence in the national media is a fool as well.

Quote of the Day, Publish or Perish Edition
A pile of articles aren't much to curl up with at night, and they certainly don't pay any attention to you when you're pissing your pants at a nursing home.

One day after the unions enter the debate over health care, violence breaks out. Who could have seen that coming?

300 Extra Wedding Guests
Irish Central: Happy Couple Invite Stranded G.I.'s to Join Wedding Celebrations
U.S. soldiers were given a true Irish welcome at a wedding in County Clare this week.
The 300 troops were stranded in Shannon last weekend after their Iraq-bound plane was grounded.
As luck would have it, they were booked into the same hotel as the wedding party for Amelia Walsh and Sean O'Neill.
And so the 300 troops were invited to join the festivities at the Clare Inn in Newmarket-on-Fergus. [...]
[the groom's uncle Joe] O'Neill, who flew in to the wedding from his home in San Francisco, said: "As the soldiers began to mingle into the private wedding party banquet area they were told by their Commanding Officer that the area was a private party and off limits.
"Common decency, and Irish hospitality however, overruled personal political opinions, and the groom, a fine young man, accepting that I might be a little prejudiced in this respect, informed the Commanding Officer that they were welcome to join the party.
"I believe the groom’s brother summed up the general feeling of wedding guests when he said, 'If my own son happened to be in that situation in a foreign country, I would hope that someone would show him a bit of a good time before he had to face what they are going to,'" he said.
I haven't been to Ireland in over a decade, and I'm told it's a very different place now, but it's nice to read that things like this still happen.

Frank McCourt Dies at 78
A sad day indeed.
What to say, other than to lament the fact that America is a place where the masses elevate fools into rich heros, only to leave real genuis and the victims and survivors of genuine hardship by the wayside.
McCourt was a rare exception to the rule, just the second celebrity whose death I have cried over, and a man who was worth a million Michael Jacksons.
Rest in peace Frankie.
UPDATE: Here's another story on his life and death.
UPDATE 2: I bought Angela's Ashes for my father as a Christmas present in 1996, after seeing and being mesmerized by McCourt on the Tom Snyder show. I think that my dad was somewhat insulted by the back cover, which read:
When I look back on my childhood, I wonder how I survived at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood.
A year later he finally read it while vacationing in Hawaii, and subsequently shared it with probably everyone he thought would take the time to read it. In this way I feel like I discovered McCourt, which I guess makes his death more personal.

Asked and Answered
This one has often plagued me:
Q: Isn't alcohol just a temporary solution to the problems that you face?
A: It's only temporary if you stop drinking.
As they say, it's not a drinking problem, it's a drinking solution.

Seriously, this is pathetic considering that this is one position of power where words and their usage truly matter and have serious consequences.

Michael Jackson Cured Cancer
He must have, right, to merit a virtual media blackout of any news unrelated to his death.
The strangest part is that people keep saying they're shocked, and didn't see this coming. Were they paying attention to way this freakshow lived his life? That was the real tragedy -- his life -- not his death.
Personally, I'm a million times more saddened by the death of pitchman Billy Mays, who seemed a really decent guy.

A Thought on Iran
It seems to me that the people who have all the answers as to what we should do in response to events in Iran are the very people who were clamoring to bomb and/or invade that nation just months ago.

Second Amendment Gone Wrong

Second Amendment Gone Senile

I had an experience that I thought I'd blogged about (but can't find it) in which a young black man paced back and forth at a neighbor's house before entering; I immediately called 911 and was angry about DC's draconian gun laws which prevented me from defending my neighbor's property rights.
Except it turned out that because I wasn't wearing my glasses I mistook a kid working on the neighbor's house for someone breaking and entering. As embarrassed as I was when the cops got there and had to apologize for the mistake, I was glad that I didn't have a gun and thus wasn't able to play a low budget (and vision impaired) Clint Eastwood.

Quote of the Day, New Puppy Edition
I pick up my puppy on Friday, and today I went out and spent a bunch of money that I don't really have on a crate, blankets, toys and treats. Which prompted my saying this to several people:
I don't even have her yet and she's already spoiled.
